Common Q's & A's
Have a question? See if it's answered down below!
Do you sell dogs as family companions only? What if we don't do any sports?
The answer is sometimes. While my goal is to always place my dogs in performance and sport homes, I occasionally have a puppy who I think might be happy in just an active family home. I will not sell to first time dutch shepherd homes as a family companion.
Will you place a puppy in a service dog home?
No. I do not sell to homes for service work. I am strongly against seeking Dutch Shepherds for service work, the breed is not a good choice.
Will you sell to a personal protection home? I am looking for a dog to protect my kids and wife when I am traveling or at work.
Most of the time, no. Unless you can prove you are working with an ethical and reputable trainer for your PPD work, I will not place a puppy for this type of work. Dogs are not naturally protective and creating a true PPD is very time consuming and expensive. I DO sell to protection sport homes.
I have never participated in protection sports before, but I am interested in getting started. Will you still place a dog with me?
YES!! I love working with first time handlers and think it is so important they have access to an ethical & well bred dog to start. It will be important that you have already established yourself with a club, or have a relationship with a private trainer before we moved forward with placing a dog with you though.
I do not have an interest in bite sports. Instead I do performance sports like disc, dock diving, agility, etc. Is a dutch shepherd from you a good fit for me?
Yes! The dutch shepherd is a very versatile breed and I love seeing my puppies excel in performance homes.
I've owned working breeds before. I should be able to handle a dutch shepherd, right?
There is a HUGE difference between a "working breed" and a working BRED dog. Many breeds have been bred down to a companion flavor. And there's nothing wrong with that. My dogs, though, are working bred and we aim to continue to produce the drives and energy necessary to do whatever task is presented to them. A bite-bred dog is not an easy choice for companionship. There are plenty of breeders who aim for a more companion oriented dutch. I would seek those programs out if you are looking for a family companion.
Am I allowed to breed the dog I get from you? Or do you require spay/neuter?
I do allow puppies I place to be bred if all contract conditions are met. They must pass health testing to parent club standard and hold some sort of title. I do not require spay/neuter for any of my puppies, but do be warned that there are very strict repercussions for accidental litters or breeding without meeting contract conditions.
Can I come meet the parents? Can I meet the puppies when they're born?
Sometimes. Most of the times I use a stud that I do not own, in which case it would be impossible. I do not allow puppy visits until the puppies are 5 weeks old. Once of age, YES! We love visitors though do have a pretty strict cleaning/meeting protocol that must be adhered for the safety of the babies.
Can I pick my puppy?
Most of the time, NO. I do allow very experienced trainers to pick their puppy if picking for something very specific. But most of the time I will assign you a puppy in your gender preference after their professional evaluation. This ensures the best match based on personality and drive.
I put in an application. When do I know when I get a puppy?
I will go through applications when a pregnancy is confirmed. My puppies are not first come, first serve. I spend my time picking what I feel is the most suitable homes for the pairing.
When do I place my deposit?
I will usually accept a few deposits before the litter is born. But deposits will be collected after the litter is on the ground and thriving.
